THE SECOND DEATH
Revelation 2:11; 20:6,14; 21:8
He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power. This is the second death.
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.
The above 4 are the only references to the second death in the Word of God. Revelation has to do with the day of the Lord, the future. So these things have nothing to do with the present or the past. See Revelation 1:10.
In a real serious study of this subject, all traditions and notions must be left behind. And there are bound to be a lot of questions which cannot be taken up in a small space.
If it were for the past, then why never revealed to Adam or any of the OT saints? And if it were for the time the Lord was on earth, why did not He speak of it? And if it were for the present, then why did not Paul speak of it? As late as Acts 20:27 Paul was able to say, I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. And Paul never mentioned hell or the second death! Why?
Do folks have to die once before they die this second death? Or is it the first death for them? Is it an ordinary death, or is it something special? Also we know that believers die twice, which is impossible for unbelievers. For those who do not believe shall never see life (John 3:36).
When we connect this second death with the destruction of the tares in Matthew 13:30, we can see that those who have the mark of the beast and whose names are not written in the book of life are these prophesied tares. And that takes us back to the flood which destroyed the false seed at that time. That was a special death for them and might well be called second death. With these hints, the reader might go on with it.
Now to sum it up, the first reference tells us that the second death will not touch the overcomer. The overcomer is the subject of The Revelation. Trace it right thru.
The overcomers have part in the first resurrection, so again the overcomer is not under the power of the second death. So far, so good.
And if anyone was not found written ...he also would have his part in the second death. Those not written worship the beast and his image. The question is; could any of these survive till the great white throne judgment? No more than the false seed could cling to the ark and ride out the flood.
Since the ungodly do not arise or stand in the judgment, then we cannot expect to find any such at the great white throne. And if the ungodly do not appear there, then no tares.
